boom
selection is dead. long live boom!
with a heavy heart, it's fina=
lly
time for boom selection to leave the stage. it's
been a long time coming, but frankly inevitable. fr=
om
now on, there will be no more proper posts on boom selection. boom will continue in its other guises, with more
parties and other projects. more on those la=
ter.
we started this in november 2001, initially as a general pop culture=
blog in which we sorted (the 'selection') the whe=
at
(the 'boom' - clever, innit?) from the chaf=
f. that continued, but as we entered 2002 events took=
over.
freelance hellraiser's<=
/span> a
stroke of genius gained much exposure on boom, and from the number of
emails we recieved it was clear that someth=
ing of
a craze had started. boom selection became f=
ocused
on bootlegs, later to be re-termed mashups =
upon
their transition across the atlantic, and b=
ecame inseperable from the emergent movement. osymyso's intro-inspec=
tion had
just recieved its first airing, and eddy an=
d james were caning home made efforts on their radio
show. without the remix, and xfm,
boom selection would certainly have never come about - we strived to be=
the
online equivalent of their show, with the same open-mindedness, passion=
and
good humour.
what is our legacy? maybe i'm not the one =
to say. i believe we were the first mp3 blog,
a genre now so densely over-populated its difficult to find any music t=
hat isn't being blogged
by someone, somewhere (matthew perpetua kindly maintains that we were one of the=
main
inspirations in his setting up fluxblog). <=
span
class=3DGramE>while other people were coyly hiding their copyrig=
ht
infringing ways on p2p networks we were openly, and regularly, posting
wholly unoriginal music directly on the web. in
some ways this direct connection - between the words about music and the
music itself - was quite revolutionary in music journalism. in other, more realistic ways we quickly realised =
that
what people wanted were not the badly spelt ramblings of a few idiots -
they wanted the money shot. mp3s. so we gave=
them,
in ever increasing quantities.
personally, i<=
/span>
have tired of it. i've<=
/span>
been doing this 4 years now, and it's time for me to move on to somethi=
ng
fresh and original. i=
span>
never wanted to write about music. i'm
no good with wanky metaphors and
musically-literate descriptions. i
just loved the music i was hearing, and wan=
ted to
spread it to as wide an audience as possible. blogging mp3s seemed the best way to do tha=
t. i'm moving to <=
st1:City>lo=
ndon now - email me if you wa=
nt to
buy me lunch in exchange for some poor bootleg anc=
edotes.
while you are waiting for my autobiography t=
o be
published, if you are an overpaid music industry person you can come se=
e me
speak at the In The City=
music
industry conference in Manchester on October 3rd. I will b=
e on
the Mashupography panel with Go Home
Productions and some scary music lawyer types, so wish me luck. registration costs about £500, so i wouldn't register especially to hear me speak.<=
o:p>
being part of bo=
om has
been fun - i got sent a load of music, got =
nice
(and not so nice) things written about me, got to put on nights of love=
ly
music, made (and lost) a bit of money and met people who wouldn't norma=
lly
give me the time of day. it wasn't just me t=
hough.
andy (mky), steve mannion (el mannion) =
and laura (lorenzo) all t=
ook
their turns on the boom selection merry-go-round, and without them fuck=
all
would have happened. andy
especially, since he was the one who first introduced me to a stroke of
genius.
boom is now more than boom
selection - the blog - it has spanned illic=
it
record releases, club nights and a magazine that never actually got
published. i hop=
e that
some of these can continue/be revived in the future. for
now, here are two projects that have finally happened - a collaborative
remix album, enRAGED, and a new BOOM party.=

this remix album shits on all the others. we've
picked the best rage against the machine tracks (no boring filler track=
