27th Remix Night @ Cargo, London (21/08/03)

Billed as a 'New Skool Meets The Old Skool', Shut Up & Dance took to the stage after Eddy & James did a tight warm-up of all the current big tunes (Tiga "Burning Down", Benny Benassi "Satisfaction", Layo & Bushwacka! "Shining Through" etc.). Smiley, sweating like mad on the decks and PJ MC-ing; crowd were rocking with plenty of hands in the air moments when rave classics like L.F.O. "L.F.O." & Prodigy "Charly" were dropped. Audio Bullys followed , keeping the pace hype until close.

August and everything inbetween...

As Rakim once said, "It's been a long time" and in blogging terms, it has, so here it comes:

DJ-ING IN DUBLIN & BUDAPEST

Friday 18th July I was invited to DJ at opening night of Dublin's XEROX club night.

So touched by all the Dubliners who fondly remembered & religiously watched MTV's Party Zone back in the late 80s/early 90s. Dave Corway, who picked me up from the airport enthused so much about the show, with VJ/presenter Simone and how everyone saw it as essential viewing in order to be informed on everything happening in 'club/dance' culture.

Similarly, my short daily presenting bits about the web, 'The Net Minute' got the props - thanks guys!!!!

The DJ-ing itself was a laugh and after playing a healthy dose of booties, went back to the hotel, got about an hour's kip before having to get up, fly back to London and present my Saturday Xfm show. 'Nuff respex to SpeakerTreatz & Detboyear for looking after me and pushing their innvovative club night.

A week later it was off to Budapest for a spot on Tilos Radio alongside TCR's mighty breaks man, BLIM whose new tune, "2Freaks" with MC Chickaboo, I'm feeling. Palotai who runs tings on Tilos Radio is a great DJ and watching him spin to a crowd at West Balkan was all good - very up on the tunes with a healthy electro-breaks selection that included DJ Shadow/Z-Trip & Layo & Bushwacka!

Thanks again to all the hospitable Hungarians - Laszlo Szell, Gyozo Szalontay & Andy.

BASTARD 27

"London's premier Cut n Paste Bootleg club night" seriously delivered on Thursday 7th August

Just missed 'El Mannion's' set but from what I read on Get Your Bootleg On it was hot and we aired some of it on The Remix so I know it was hot. Download it here!

Strictly Kev followed and his set was one of the best I've ever heard. He created 'bootlegs' and 'remixes' live with 2 x turntables and a CD player. Hell, he even bought his own needles (!) You need to see and hear this man LIVE if you haven't already. So many highlights including: S-Club vs KRS-1's "Sound Of The Police", Beastie Boys’ "Intergalactic" acapella over Frankie Goes To Hollywood's "Relax", Eve's "Let Me Blow Your Mind" with Plastikman…

Kev's firmly on a level with The Avalanches and Soulwax, possibly better considering he's flying solo. Listen out for a 30-minute Superchunk mix from him on 'The Remix' in the new year, with El Mannion himself scheduled straight after.

This brings me on to:

THE PHOENIX RISES FROM THE ASHES

Shit, I could rant on and on about Boom Selection. It turned me onto 'blogging'. Daniel Sheldon aka 'The Dr.' who started 'Boom Selection' was very much inspired by The Remix back in the time of its early Sunday afternoon slot. See for yourself

Ably assisted by Mky and Mannion (he gets everywhere), this site became the 'CNN' of all things bootleg, mash-up, bastard pop etc. I would check it daily, it was probably my homepage!! May it become again what it was, a personal portal for 'Punk Pop' with the DIY ethic running strong throughout.
